Update from NYU Sanctuary, April 11, 2017

To our fellow members of the NYU Sanctuary Working Group:

Our movement has had a real outcome in a very short time.  On Tuesday, April 4th, four key parts of our campaign came together to push for the most effective possible meeting between our students and NYU administration—represented by President Andy Hamilton and Associate Vice Chancellor of Global Programs Josh Taylor. The students selected a group of representatives that spanned undergraduate and graduate levels, and created a cross-coalition of students from multiple, important student groups (including the NYU Black Students Union, NYU Muslim Students Association, and NYU Dream Team), and international students.  Alongside a planning meeting and then a training session, the students prepared the cover letter, talking points, and an exhaustive strategy reference chart regarding the list of demands (see full list here).

Although we consider the meeting with Hamilton as the minimum first step, the students are now working hard to ensure that the most acute demands (such as financial aid and housing) are met and fulfilled within the next few weeks before the summer. We ask that you mark the following date on your calendar:

Friday, April 14th, 4-6pm, Celebrating and Thinking Ahead: Next NYU Sanctuary Working Group
at Golding Lounge (second floor), Vanderbilt Hall, 40 Washington Square South

Come celebrate two great victories—the Student-led meeting with Hamilton & Ravi’s hearing postponement until 2018! Everyone has worked so hard and we invite everyone to celebrate and join in the next stage of planning critical strategies around sanctuary. What are the long-term visions, and immediate actions we are planning? We will have dumplings to share, and we encourage everyone to bring food or drinks to share! Please come and participate—we welcome new members to come get involved!
